Don’t worry about too much, this article will show you two useful ways to backup OneDrive to NAS like Synology, namely using Synology Cloud Sync and third-party file backup software AOMEI Backupper Standard. Get details in the following.

Method 1: Backup OneDrive to NAS with Synology Cloud Sync

Synology Cloud Sync is a useful tool for all Synology NAS devices to backup data on multiple public cloud storage like OneDrive. Also, you can set sync options during the process, such as, sync direction, selective sync, schedule sync, encryption and compression, traffic control, and more.

Now, let’s make preparations and backup OneDrive files with following steps.

  • Make sure the DiskStation is running DSM 6.0 or later version.

  • Install Synology Cloud Sync in the package center.

Step 1. Open Synology Could Sync and establish a connection for OneDrive and Synology NAS.  Click “+” at the lower left corner > select OneDrive > log in your account and authorize this software. 

Note: Also, you can perform Synology Cloud Sync OneDrive for Business by choosing OneDrive for Business as a replacement. The subsequent steps are similar.

Step 2. Then, you will enter the Task setting window, please set a unique connection name for clearly distinguish, local path, remote path, sync direction. 

  • Local path: Select a local folder on Synology NAS to store files. Please don’t use the root folder of Synology NAS, otherwise you can only create one synchronization task.

  • Remote path: Select a remote folder containing OneDrive files you want to sync. Also, if you want to sync all the OneDrive files to Synology, you could choose the root folder of OneDrive.

  • Sync direction: You could choose among bidirectional sync, download remote changes only, or upload local changes only. Here is download remote changes only, then you will see an option "Don't remove files in the destination folder when they are removed in the source folder" in the lower location, please tick it to keep data intact in destination. 

Step 3. In the confirm settings window, click “Advanced settings” to uncheck folders you don’t want sync, filter files by file size, file type, file name or extension. After that, click “Apply” to start the backup task.

Synology Cloud Sync is widely used to backup OneDrive or other public cloud storage to Synology NAS to add an extra layer of the important data. But you may find Synology Cloud Sync not working even up to date. At this time, you choose to use another backup software, it’s AOMEI Backupper Standard.

Step 1. Launch AOMEI Backupper Standard, then you will see its deep-blue interface. Click “Backup” and “File Backup” to start this task.

Note: If you want to protect your precious files while making them easy to access, family photos, for example, you could consider using basic sync feature in the Sync tab.

Step 2. Click "Add Folder" to select OneDrive desktop folder, it will contain all the files in OneDrive.

Then, click "Desktop" and select OneDrive folder in the pop-up window.

Step 3. Click where the arrow point to select a folder on Synology NAS. You need to add Synology NAS ahead of time if this is your first time to create file backup with AOMEI Backupper.

First, click “Share/NAS” in the pop-up window.

Next, click “Add Share or NAS Devices”, and then type display name, IP address, username and password of your Synology NAS.

After that, it will be listed under the network location tab. Just double-click it and select a folder to store OneDrive files.

Step 4. To protect data continuously, click “Schedule” and “OK” to enable the default backup options - daily incremental backup. It will backup files and changes made every day, which greatly reduce the risk of data loss. Finally, click “Start Backup”.

Notes: Options: You can make a comment for this task, compress files with normal or high compression level, enable email notification, create pre/post-command, etc. Schedule: Except for daily incremental backup, you can still choose backup options among weekly backup, monthly backup, full backup, differential backup or combine them per your needs. Please note differential backup is only available on AOMEI Backupper Professional or higher version. Scheme: You can delete old backup to retain specific number of backups or backup cycle, and there are 3 options in total. If necessary, please upgrade to AOMEI Backupper Professional at least.
