- Question from Spicework

Whatever storage device you use, you must have a strong reliance on it to save your important data and files. Some wise users would never risk saving their valuable data on only one device, yet many users are unconcerned with backups.

As a result, when they have accidentally formatted hard drive or some other storage devices, people get panic. If you are one of them, don't be discouraged; this post will offer a couple of formatted data recovery applications for Windows 7/8/10/11.

Free formatted data recovery tool – Windows File Recovery

Some users will be interested in a free one. Here, Windows File Recovery developed by Microsoft can meet your needs.

As stated by Microsoft, it is an official tool that can restore deleted files from healthy/corrupted/formatted hard drives. Using its recovery mode and parameters, it scans the source hard drives and creates a folder on the destination drive.

Unluckily, due to its rough interface and complex commands, it will be a difficult task for ordinary users to use it.

Now follow the instructions to restore files from a formatted hard drive. To learn more detailed info about recovery modes and switches, refer to the Windows File Recovery use guide.

Notes:✎...
If you are to restore data from an external hard drive, please connect it properly.
It only applies to a quick formatted disk.
When meeting any related errors, refer to the Windows File Recovery troubleshooting tutorial.

Step 1. Go to This PC > right-click on the partition/drive that you have formatted > click Properties. See what file system the drive is using.

Step 2. Choose a recovery mode.

File system Scenarios mode
NTFS Deleted recently Regular
NTFS Deleted for a while Extensive
NTFS Formatted disk Extensive
NTFS corrupted disk Extensive
FAT and exFAT Any Extensive

Step 3. Select switches from the chart below. Switches can specify the scanning range.

Switches Meaning Supported mode(s)
/n Filter the scan range: scans for a specific file with its file name/path/type, etc. All
/y: Recovers specific extension groups. Signature
/k Recovers system files. NTFS Segment
/segment Segment mode; recovers files under NTFS drives using file record segments. Segment
/signature Signature mode; recovers files under all file system types using file headers. Signature
/u Recovers undeleted files, for example, from the Recycle Bin. NTFS Segment

Step 4. Go to Microsoft Store > click Get to install Windows File Recovery.

Step 5. Run the program > input the command:

winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/mode] [/switches]

Source drive: the partition/drive that has been formatted.
Target drive: where you want to save the recovered files. Must be different from the source drive.

For instance, input:

winfr E: D: /segment /n *.docx

Using it, you could recover all docx files from the formatted E: drive to D: drive.

Pros: official, free, and safe.

Cons:

  • Way too difficult for common users.
  • No intuitive user interface.
  • Not user-friendly.
  • Low recovery rate.
  • Low scanning speed.

If you meet the error “there was an error parsing your command”, you may have input a wrong command, please check the syntax, or use an easier tool recommended in the next part.
