How to Perform Veeam Instant Disk Recovery for Critical Data [ Alternatives]

Veeam’s Instant Disk Recovery can restore individual virtual machine disks rapidly, addressing data loss scenarios without needing to recover an entire VM, a vital benefit for organizations that rely heavily on virtualized environments.

What is Veeam Instant Disk Recovery

Veeam Instant Disk Recovery allows administrators to restore a specific VM disk to its original or a different location on a hypervisor. This feature is especially useful when only certain parts of the VM, such as the system disk or data disk, are affected. Unlike full VM restores, which can be time-intensive, disk recovery focuses on restoring the specific volumes that are damaged or missing, improving recovery speed and efficiency.

How Veeam Backup Instant Disk Recovery Works

  • Check that the vPower NFS datastore is mounted to the ESXi host and contains the VMDK file for the recovered disk.
  • (If replacing an existing disk) unmount and remove the existing disk.
  • Attach the recovered disk to the target virtual machine.
  • Initiate protection snapshot creation for the target virtual machine. If the Instant Disk Recovery process fails, the Protected Snapshot ensures that no data will be lost.
  • Write changes made to the recovered disk to the redo log on the vPower NFS server. ed.

How to Perform Instant VM Disk Recovery

1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication console, click Instant Disk Recovery. Alternatively, right-click a VM whose disks you want to restore and select Instant disk recovery.

2. Choose the virtual machine you want to restore.

3. Specify the Restore Point from which you want to recover VM disks.

4. In the Mount Mode step, select VM disk to register virtual disks on a VM added to an ESXi host.

To register virtual disks as First Class Disks (FCD) on a cluster, select First Class Disk (FCD). This triggers Instant FCD Recovery, as described in the Performing Instant First Class Disk (FCD) Recovery section.

Note: This step is unavailable if restoring VMware vSphere VM disks from a storage snapshot.

5. In the Disk Mapping step, select the virtual disks to restore and choose a VM to attach them to.

By default, Veeam Backup & Replication maps disks to the original VM. If the original VM was moved or you prefer another VM, select a different target VM.

Note: Do not use the backup server or a VM where the vPower NFS Service is installed as a target VM.

6. Choose whether to try Veeam Backup & Replication to scan the machine data using antivirus software and YARA rules before restoring the machine to a production environment.

Note: This step is available if you restore a disk from a Microsoft Windows VM. However, this step is not available if you restore the disks from a storage snapshot.

7. At the Reason wizard, enter a reason for restoring VM disks.

8. Next to Summary wizard, check the settings for Instant Disk Recovery and then click Finish.

After successfully recovering the disks, you must decide whether to migrate the disks to the production environment or stop publishing them.
