Veeam Instant Recovery for Azure VM

Veeam Instant Recovery provides near-instantaneous recovery of disparate workloads (virtual machines, Google VM instances, physical servers, etc.). For example, it’s easy for instant recovery from Hyper-V to VMware when you need to convert data.

Also, by utilizing Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure, users can reduce Azure VMs recovery time from hours or even days to minutes.

How Veeam Instant Recovery to Azure Works

☞ Veeam Backup & Replication creates VM backups and stores them in a repository, which can be replicated to Azure Blob storage or Azure Managed Disks.

☞ During recovery, Veeam instant recovery mounts the backup as a writable disk in Azure and starts the VM directly from it, ensuring quick application availability. Changes made during this process are streamed back to the backup file.

☞ Once fully restored, the VM can be transitioned back to its original environment, either on-premises or in Azure, offering flexible recovery options.

How to Perform Veeam Instant Recovery to Microsoft Azure

Veeam Backup & Replication allows you to restore Azure VMs from image-level backups to VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments or Nutanix AHV clusters using instant recovery.

Next, this section describes the steps specifically on how to restore Azure VMs to Hyper-V environments.

1. In the Veeam Backup & Replication, select the necessary Azure workloads and click Instant Recovery > Microsoft Hyper-V.

2. Click Add to select workloads that you want to recover.

3. Select the restore point from which you want to recover the workload.

4. Choose the restore mode such as Restore to the original location/ Restore to a new location, or with different settings.

5. Select the recovery target. Specify a target Hyper-V host or a Hyper-V cluster where you want to locate the recovered VMs.

6. specify a path to the folder where VM configuration files and disks will be stored.

✍Note: Check that the Allocate required disk space before migration check box is selected if you want to preallocate disk space required for the recovered VM. Otherwise, clear the check box.

7. Select a network to which the selected workload must be connected after recovery.

8. Assign a unique name to the recovered virtual machine usually by adding a prefix or suffix to the original workload name.

9. Click Finish to start the instant recovery process.

After the background recovery task is successfully completed, you have the flexibility to choose to smoothly switch the recovered VMs back to the production environment, thus ensuring that the business can continue to run continuously.

✨Tips for Veeam instant recovery to Hyper-V 1. After the backup is complete, you can use Veeam's Backup Verification tool to check the backup file, which detects possible problems during the backup process, such as data corruption, file loss, and so on. 2. Configure network security groups (NSGs) and firewall rules appropriately in the Azure environment. Ensure that only authorized IP addresses or networks can access the restored virtual machines. 3. Ensure secure data transfer during backup file transfer to Azure and during instant recovery. Use SSL/TLS encryption protocols to protect the transmission of data across the network. 4. Ensure that there are sufficient compute resources (e.g., CPU, memory), storage resources (e.g., disk space), and network resources (e.g., IP addresses) available in your Azure subscription when restoring virtual machines.

Easy Steps to Perform Instant Recovery for Virtual Machines

Note: * The instant restore feature is applicable to backup points of ESXi virtual machines. AOMEI Cyber Backup must be installed on Windows Server 2012 or higher versions of the operating system. * The backup points of the virtual machine must be stored on the local disk.

Step 1. Create VMware ESXi VMs Backup and then start VM instant recovery.

Step 2. Create New Instant Recovery as following:

βœ” Click "Task" > "Instant Recovery" > "New Instant Recovery". Here we take "Restore from task" for an example.

βœ” Select Source and choose the virtual machine and backup version.

βœ” Select the device to be restored to in "Restore to". Choose the target device.

βœ” Set the hardware settings for the new virtual machine, such as CPU quantity, CPU Cores and memory size.

βœ” Enter a name for the new virtual machine.

βœ” Click "Start Restore" to start the instant restore.

Step 3. Migrate VM to production environment as following:

βœ” After creating vm instant recovery, click Start Migration on details page to return backup to production environment.

Conclusion

Following the steps in this article, you can simply restore Azure workloads to Hyper-V, greatly reducing downtime and ensuring the resilience and continuity of your organization's data and applications.

And, AOMEI Cyber Backup as an excellent data backup and recovery solution helps organizations to achieve minimum recovery time objectives (RTO) and maintain smooth operations in the event of an outage.
