Repair Windows 2019 boot issue via DiskPart

1. Prepare a Windows Server 2019 installation device (DVD or USB) to boot your computer if it fails to boot. After you manage to boot into the system, you’ll see a Windows Server setup window, please press Next.

2. In the following window, click Repair your computerTroubleshootCommand Prompt.

3. Once the Command Prompt window appear, enter DISKPART > select disk 0 (Disk 0 is now the selected disk) > list vol.

4. There is no drive letter assignment to our UEFI partition (volume 3) so we need to assign a drive letter.

5. Input sel vol 3 > assign letter=E:

6. Exit DiskPart tool.

7. Next, we need to change to the boot folder on the UEFI volume. Change the UEFI volume into the boot folder. Depending on the way Windows was installed this path may be one of the following.

  • cd /d E:\Boot\
  • cd /d E:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\
  • cd /d E:\ESD\Windows\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\

8. Now we will need to enter three command lines to repair the BCD store. Again depending on the way Windows was installed these may not all be necessary, however, command lines are unnecessary and will not affect the outcome.

  • bootrec /fixboot
  • bootrec /fixmbr
  • bootrec /rebuildbcd

9. Note, after issuing the /rebuildbcd command, don’t be surprised if you see “0 Windows Installations found”.

10. Restart the computer with the installation media removed to check if the Windows Server 2019 UEFI boot error has been settled.

However, what if you don't have an installation media yet? This is not a difficult task, and the following will cover the details for you.

Further Readings: What causes Windows Server 2019 UEFI boot errors?

There are several possible causes for a Windows Server 2019 computer to fail to start due to UEFI boot errors. Below are the most common reasons:

Installing a Second Operating System (Dual Boot Configuration):

  • Adding another operating system alongside Windows Server 2019 in a dual boot setup can overwrite or alter the bootloader files, leading to UEFI boot corruption. This is especially common when the new OS modifies the EFI boot partition.

File System Corruption:

  • Corruption of the file system, particularly on the EFI System Partition (ESP) or the drive containing critical boot files, can prevent Windows from booting properly. Causes may include sudden power loss, hardware issues, or software conflicts.

Incorrect Operations During Windows Recovery or Repair Attempts:

  • Errors during the recovery process, such as misusing recovery commands or tools, may unintentionally modify or delete essential boot files, failing to boot.

Deletion or Damage to Hidden Partitions:

  • Hidden partitions, such as the EFI System Partition or Recovery Partition, are crucial for proper booting. Accidental deletion, improper resizing, or corruption of these partitions can disrupt the boot process.

Malware Infection (Viruses, Ransomware, etc.):

  • Malicious software can target and corrupt the bootloader or critical system files, making the system unbootable. Ransomware attacks, for example, may encrypt or delete essential boot files.

Driver or Firmware Incompatibilities:

  • Updates to hardware drivers or UEFI/BIOS firmware that are incompatible with the current configuration can lead to boot issues, particularly when secure boot or other UEFI-specific features are misconfigured.

Hardware Failures:

  • A failing hard drive, corrupted RAID configuration, or issues with storage controllers can result in the system being unable to locate or load the boot files.

Improper Disk Configuration Changes:

  • Modifying partition layouts, changing disk formats (e.g., converting from MBR to GPT), or using disk management tools without understanding their impact on the UEFI boot process can cause errors.
