Symptoms

Case1

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y500. When I first got the laptop, even though I should have, I did not immediately setup the OneKey Recovery Backup feature that comes with the laptop. When I try to back it up now, the recovery part of the hard drive that was partitioned is not large enough to hold my files and I get an error message when attempting a backup saying "the available space is not enough".

Case2

I have a Lenovo G580 - It comes with it's own OneKey Recovery system which doesn't work. But neither does Windows 7 recovery. When I try to back it up, it does but then it stops half way and says there is not enough space in the D drive to back-up. So I went into Disk Management and saw that it was limited to 25GB - So I tried to extend the volume but it has been greyed out so I cannot select it. What can I do? I can't back it up or anything! I also had an error message which is the above: 0x80780048

Solutions

Solution1

You CANNOT save an image file to a partition contained in the image. So, an image of C cannot be saved to C. Nor should you be backing up to Disk 0 in general. If Disk 0 drops dead, your saved image file is also dead and gone. So, get an external hard drive, and back up your files onto that.

Solution2

If you do need to save system image on system hard disk, use Disk Management to delete the partition which has no enough space to make it unallocated; shrink some free space (this free space together with the unallocated space should be enough to save system backup image file) form the partition which is very before the unallocated space. The shrunk-out free space and the unallocated space will be together. Finally create a new partition on it to store your system image.

Solution3

If you don't want to delete the partition, you can use a free partition software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, to merge the partitions with a partition that is very behind or very before it into one larger partition without data loss. Then, the new partition should be large enough to save system backup.

Solution4

There is an alternative to Lenovo OneKey Recovery – AOMEI OneKey Recovery, which enables you change another partition enough to store os image as backup destination.

If your have encountered such problem that there is not enough space for system backup, you can try the solutions mentioned above. They will pull you out of trouble.
