Can Windows 11 be installed without a Microsoft account?

Windows 11 forced everyone to have a Microsoft account and I actually have an MS account. But still don’t want to use it for my windows user. Personally, I don’t want any information being shared with MS’s servers, or synced between my PCs. It tries to put all your docs in one drive but folders are named exactly the same as they are in your local dir.

And whenever you set up a PC with an MS account, it will automatically pick your username to be the first letters of your email. And you cannot just change your username.

I want my OS only connect to servers when I tell it to. I don’t like the idea that I can’t just do basic Windows installation without a Microsoft account. Can I install Windows 11 without Microsoft account?

- Question from Reddit

In the past, Microsoft users had the option to choose between a local account or a Microsoft account when setting up their PCs, but now Windows 11 Home mandates a Microsoft account during installation.

Learn how to navigate this requirement and set up Windows 11 Home without a Microsoft account, ensuring a personalized and convenient experience. Explore the solutions provided in this article and find the approach that best suits your needs.

Windows 11 setup: local account VS Microsoft account

As mentioned before, there are a local account and a Microsoft account on your Microsoft PC. Therefore, I will introduce you to the differences between the two accounts.

  • Microsoft account: Microsoft account is also known as Windows Live ID or Microsoft Passport. It’s an online account and if you use services such as OneDrive, Xbox, or Skype you need to sign in to your MS account. With an MS account, you can enjoy free cloud storage of OneDrive and sync all your settings and data.
  • Local account: It’s an offline account and you don’t need a network connection or an email address. You need to set a username and password and then you will have the access to the system’s resources and settings. You can use this account only for this device and you will be more secure since everything will be stored locally.

You can choose to use a local account or a Microsoft account in Windows 10. However, in Windows 11, it seems that the Home edition only gives you the option for a Microsoft account. But just like the above case, many users prefer local accounts as privacy.

Additionally, as an offline account, it has more security and you can easily log in with your password. So, in this article, I will help you to install Windows 11 without Microsoft account.
