Where are Lightroom backups kept?

Developed by Adobe Inc., Abode Lightroom (known as Adobe Photoshop Lightroom) is image organization and manipulation software that can help you import, save, view, organize, edit, and share many digital images among Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Apple TV devices.

The Abode Lightroom Classic catalog is the location of Lightroom backups. To be more specific, it’s a database that can automatically record and update changes in your edited photos.

  • For Windows OS users, go to \Users\UserName\Pictures\Lightroom
  • For macOS users, go to /Users/UserName/Pictures/Lightroom

If you’re the first time using Abode Lightroom, you can get an empty catalog file. After that, you can choose Edit > Preferences > General to check your Default Catalog.

How to find missing photos in Lightroom

Abode Lightroom provides two options for users to delete photos. As the picture shows, Remove from Lightroom or Delete from Disk.

» Remove from Lightroom: It allows you to delete unwanted image files and the relevant edition process from Lightroom Catalog and any Lightroom synced clients. So you can recover deleted files from Lightroom backup.

» Delete from Disk: It will move deleted photos from Lightroom to Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (macOS). Thus, you can try to recover deleted files from Recycle Bin or Trash before permanent deletion.

In addition, starting from Lightroom desktop version 2.4  and Lightroom for mobile (iOS and Android) version 4.4, it offers users the Deleted album in the My Photos of Lightroom and allows users to retrieve deleted photos within 60 days.
