Recover data from SSD

I've got an external SSD (1 TB). Some months ago I've deleted some files thinking that they weren't important, and now I need them. Until now, I've never formatted. I was wondering if is possible to recover deleted overwritten files from this SSD. Hope that someone could help me!

- Question from Reddit

What is SSD?

SSD is what we usually call solid state drive. It is a hard drive composed of integrated circuit components. It offers faster read and write speeds, is lighter, quieter, resistant to vibration, produces low heat, has a more practical size/formality/durability, and is less prone to failure, making it the standard drive type for modern laptops, desktops PCs and servers.

What's more, unlike HDDs, SSDs are storage media that use non-volatile (flash) memory to save and access data. In other words, there are no moving parts, which makes a big difference compared to other hard drives. So, more and more people prefer to use SSD drives.

However, while SSDs have many distinctive features, just like traditional hard drives, data loss can also occur due to various reasons, such as accidental deletion.

Can you recover deleted data from SSD?

Can delete files on SSD be recovered? Actually, SSD data recovery is indeed possible, but one of its features - TRIM can complicate things a bit, your success rate may greatly depend on whether you have the TRIM command enabled or not.

trim__310x211

TRIM is an Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) command that enables the Operating System to inform the SSD which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be erased internally to prepare new blocks.

When TRIM is enabled, the SSD TRIM command allows your OS to notify the SSD that unused data can be erased internally. This is done to speed up subsequent write operations, thereby improving the overall performance of the SSD.

However, it eliminates the possibility of recovering data on the device, because when you do a "delete" operation, it will completely wipe the data blocks, and those deleted files are just marked as free space, waiting to be overwritten by new data.

But that doesn't mean you don't have a chance to recover deleted data from SSD. Fortunately, as long as you start the recovery process as soon as possible before the TRIM command has a chance to trigger, or use a reliable SSD recovery application, especially if a TRIM-enabled SSD fails, you can easily recover deleted files from SSD free.

How to recover deleted data from SSD on Windows

Next, we will discuss how to recover deleted data from SSD. As said above, no matter how you lost data on SSD, as soon as you notice the loss of files on SSD disk, immediately disable TRIM on SSD. So the first way is to disable TRIM.

📝Note: To increase your chances of recovering data from an SSD, you should stop using a SSD as soon as you notice data loss to avoid overwriting deleted data.

Preparation: Disable TRIM Command

The sooner you take action, the better your chances of recovering your SSD data. Now, follow the steps below to disable the command.

Step 1. Click the Start button, type cmd in the search box, click Run as Administrator.

Step 2. Type fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 1 and press Enter.
