Fixed: Veeam Instant Recovery Finalization Will Not Boot
Instant recovery finalize is the last part of Veeam Instant Recovery, which ensures that the recovery is completed smoothly, but there may be some reasons that cause problems in the finalize process in this part.
Instant Recovery Finalization Will not Boot
About 3 days ago we had a server that got infected. We used instant restore to boot the backup on the BDR host, also running vmware, from a backup before the infection and this has been working great ever since. Tonight, I went to finalize the instant restore to our production host, and everything seemed to go well with the job, except for there was an error that said "Waiting for heartbeat". I powered up the vm on the production host, and I get a windows repair loop. I have tried BCD repairs, registry repairs, I even built a new vm and attached the vmdk's but still no luck. Anyone ever ran into this before?
- Question from Veeam R&D Forums
Veeam Instant Recovery's ability to restore and run virtual machines (VMs) directly from backup storage in minutes is a powerful feature. After completing Instant Recovery there is the finalization of the recovery process which includes migrating to production and stopping publishing the recovered VMs. This process sometimes fails or is incomplete. To implement instant recovery finalization correctly and completely, you need to understand and resolve the causes of problems promptly. This next article will provide the reasons and solutions for Veeam Instant Recovery not finalized and the steps to implement Veeam Instant Recovery finalize.
Reasons and Solutions for Veeam Instant Recovery Not Finalized
Below are common reasons why Veeam Instant Recovery finalization will not boot, as well as some options for resolving these issues.
1. Backup Repository Issues
👉Causes:
★Repository Locked: The backup repository may be locked by other Veeam processes, for example, Backup, Copy, or Restore.
★Network Connection: Poor network connection between the Veeam Server and the backup repository.
★Storage Performance: Slow or overburdened backup storage can delay or interrupt migration.
👉Solutions:
▶Check no other processes are using the repository and release any locks.
▶Ensure that the repository is accessible over a stable network connection.
▶Optimize the storage system or migrate to a better-performing repository.
2. Insufficient Resource on the Target Host
👉Causes:
✦The target production host lacks sufficient CPU, memory, or storage space to accommodate the restored virtual machine.
✦The datastore capacity is exhausted, resulting in the final processor being unable to write data to storage.
✦The target host is overloaded with other workloads.
👉Solutions:
◆Verify the availability of resources (CPU, memory, and storage) on the target host and datastore.
◆Move the workload or free up space in the datastore.
How to Set Veeam Instant Recovery Finalization
Before you implement the instant recovery finalization, you need to configure instant recovery. Following provides you with detailed steps to instant recovery finalize.
In the Veeam Backup & Replication Console, go to Home > Instant Recovery to select the VM you want to migrate, right-click the VM, and select Migrate to production.
🎈Note: During migration, Veeam Backup & Replication restores the virtual machine from the backup file and transfers changes made while it was running in Instant Recovery mode.
🔶Stop Publishing Recovered VM
Navigate to Home view, select Instant Recovery node, then right-click the VM and select Stop publishing.
Efficient and Easy Instant Recovery – AOMEI Cyber Backup
Choosing a reliable and powerful Instant Recovery software ensures data security during the recovery process and completes the recovery in a very short period.
AOEMI Cyber Backup is software with the above qualities, which restores VMs directly from the backup storage and ensures minimum downtime and VM startup time. At the same time, its intuitive user interface simplifies the backup and recovery process. Instant recovery is accomplished in a few simple steps, reducing the operational threshold and the risk of human error.
※ You can set instant recovery with simple steps:
Step 1. Navigate to Task > Instant Recovery > + New Instant Recovery, you can select Restore from task and Restore from local path. In the following steps, we task Restore from task as an example.
Step 2. In the Source section, choose the virtual machine and backup version.
Step 3. In the Restore to section, choose the target device.
Step 4. Set the hardware settings for the new virtual machine, including CPU quantity, CPU Cores, and memory size.
Step 5. Click Start Restore to start the instant recovery.
Step 6. Click Start Migration to restore the virtual machine to the production environment after the production environment resumes normal.
Conclusion
Finalizing Veeam Instant Recovery is a critical step to migrate VMs to their production environment. However, if something goes wrong during the finalize instant recovery process, it will result in an incomplete instant recovery. However, if there are problems with the finalize instant recovery process, the instant recovery will not be completed completely. With the steps provided in this article, you can accurately implement the entire process of instant recovery.
