Sync Synology NAS to another Synology NAS

I have 2 Synology NAS located in two different physical locations.

I would like to one-way sync from one to the other. For example if something is added or deleted on the primary NAS (1) it would then add or delete the same file(s) on the secondary NAS (2).

I see the CloudSync service, but it seems it uses this as storage as well (i.e. it eats into your Google Drive storage).

Something about Synology one way sync

Syncing, or synchronization, refers to replicating folders and maintaining their original structure. In this operation, the goal is to ensure that both the target and source directories have identical files. Essentially, syncing creates a mirror image of the source folder in the target location. That's why it's often referred to as a mirror backup, as it reflects the exact content and arrangement of files from one location to another.

Synology NAS enjoys great popularity among computer users. So lot of users may have the need to implement Synology one-way sync to get easy access to their data. So firstly, what is one-way sync?

Synology NAS

In one-way sync, files are copied exclusively from a primary location (source) to a secondary location (target) in a single direction. No files are ever transferred back to the primary location. Methods like replication and backup, also known as mirroring, fall under one-way sync techniques in applications like ViceVersa.

How to sync Synology to Synology

#1. Sync one Synology NAS to another via Shared Folder Sync/DiskStation Manager

The most straightforward and efficient method to do Synology drive one way sync is by utilizing a shared folder, providing an exact duplicate of the data on the target Network Attached Storage (NAS). Through Shared Folder Sync, folders on the source Synology NAS are synchronized with corresponding folders on the target Synology NAS using the Rsync.

✍Requirements:

  • Two Synology NAS units are on the same network.
  • The target NAS needs available space to receive synced files.
  • To set up Rsync on the target NAS, Advanced Permissions are necessary.

Step 1. How to Set up Shared Folder Sync

  1. Go to Control Panel > File Services > Rsync.
  2. Tick Enable rsync service box to set up the shared folder sync. The default port can be left alone. Both Synology NAS devices need to have Rsync enabled.
  3. Click Apply.

Enable Rsync Option

Step 2. Sync Files From a Synology NAS to Another NAS via Rsync

  1. On the source Synology NA, go to Control Panel > Shared Folder Sync > Task List.

Task List

  1. Click Create and then name the task.

✍Note: The block-level synchronization checkbox compares the data and only syncs the difference.

  1. Change the schedule on which you want this task to run.

#2. An easier way: sync two Synology NAS by AOMEI Backupper

AOMEI Backupper Standard is versatile, supporting a range of NAS drives, network shares, cloud services, as well as internal and external hard drives. It works seamlessly on Windows PCs (Windows 11, 10, 8.1/8, 7, Vista, XP), making data synchronization effortless for users.

It contains several sync modes to replicate folders between these supported devices, including Real-Time Sync, Two-Way Sync, Mirror Sync as per your needs in the advanced version.

You can set up a schedule for automatic Synology incremental backups, which will copy only the changed files each time. This feature allows you to recover any of the earlier versions as needed.

With Synology, you might have to install multiple utilities to access these features. However, AOMEI Backupper offers an all-in-one solution. Simply click the button below to start the free trial and enjoy its comprehensive functionality.

✍Tips:

  • If you want to protect your NAS data, you can rely on the Backup function of AOMEI Backupper to backup NAS to external disk, local disk, cloud drive, and so on.
  • You can add and manage multiple network shares or NAS devices in Tools > Storage Management.

To sum up

This article presents two helpful methods for achieving Synology one way sync. You can either utilize a shared folder or opt for third-party sync software. Setting up the shared folder is required on both the source NAS and the target NAS.

Alternatively, you can opt for the simpler approach by using free sync software like AOMEI Backupper Standard to sync files from Synology NAS to another NAS. The syncing process is straightforward and only requires a few steps. Moreover, you can customize the synchronization frequency to automatically perform scheduled syncs based on your specific requirements. Now start to your operations.
